Kalundborg’s industrial symbiosis is based on network collaboration between five industrial companies and Kalundborg Municipality. The companies involved are the Asnæs power station, plasterboard makers Gyproc, the pharmaceutical and biotechnology firms Novo Nordisk/Novozymes, the soil cleansing company Soilrem and the Statoil refinery.
The idea is that waste products from one company can be reused by the others.
This reduces the consumption of resources, e.g. water, coal, oil, plaster and fertiliser, enabling the companies to reduce their impact on the environment by reducing their emissions of CO2, sulphur dioxide and discharging less water.
The Asnæs power station provides district heating for Kalundborg and process steam for the Statoil refinery, Novo Nordisk and Novozymes.
The refinery uses the steam to heat its oil tanks and pipes. Novozymes and Novo Nordisk use steam for heating and sterilisation in their processing plants, and some of the cooling water from Asnæs power station is used in fish farming ponds which produce some 200 tonnes of trout and salmon a year.
Every year, Gyproc receives 200,000 tonnes of gypsum from the Asnæs power station, which covers most of its annual requirements. Gypsum replaces the natural product and is used to make plaster board.
Novozymes, the Asnæs power station and Kalundborg Municipality have shared waste water treatment facilities, which has reduced the environmental impact of the Jammerland Bay.
